The other districts
| In 1605 Henri IV decided to build a place to
install silk manufactures. This place will be built at the place
where was the Hotel des Tournelles where died King Henry II in
1559. It was destroyed by order of Catherine de Medicis, wife
of Henri II. The work was completed in 1612, but the destination
was changed : buildings fot living. Instead, almost square, the
buildings have 9 houses on each of its sides. It includes a house
of the King and a house of the Queen's which faces each other
and are elevated compared to otherhouses. The majesty of the place
made it a fashion place who attracted the nobility who built sumptuous
hotels in the "Marais" district . Marais means wetland in french
because of former wetlands that were there. The place, first known
as "Place Royale", took the name of "Place des Vosges", towards
1800, to thank the Vosges department, the first to have paid taxes
under the Revolution. At No. 6 Place des Vosges lived Victor Hugo
for nearly 16 years. A museum has been created. Have a look over

at No. 6 Place des Vosges became the property of Louis
de Rohan, Prince of Guéménée, and remained in that family
until 1784. He gave its final name to the building. It
